About

The Savara tribal art, known as Edisinge, is a unique and ancient art form that flourished in the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh. Unfortunately, this beautiful craft is on the verge of extinction due to changes in the religious practices and lifestyle of the Savara community. Historically, Edisinge art was a vital part of the tribe’s cultural identity, with a tradition passed down through generations.

In 2011, the Savara Art Society (SAS) was established to revive this endangered art form. The society has worked tirelessly to preserve the craft, training younger generations in the techniques of Edisinge. Despite efforts, only a few artists continue to practice the art, as many of the surviving practitioners are elderly.

Edisinge is deeply connected to nature and wildlife, which is reflected in the vibrant drawings created on mud walls. The artwork uses natural materials such as vermillion, rice powder, and charcoal to depict the tribe’s way of life, including agriculture, hunting, festivals, and the beauty of the forest. The paintings are traditionally refreshed every two to five years, ensuring that each piece of art remains alive with meaning and relevance.

Today, the Savara tribe resides primarily in the Seethampeta and Parvathipuram areas, with over 1,000 families continuing to uphold their rich heritage. Our mission is to revive, promote, and preserve the Edisinge art form, ensuring that it continues to be a vital part of the Savara community’s cultural legacy.
